I know, I know, I said this blog was gonna be grand, that it would be full of music and lead to a bigger better blog and…. and… and…

Well, frankly I just don’t have the time or the heart (see title of this post) to continue this blog right now.  I have a lot of other things going on, one of which is an album of demos I have begun working on. I believe this will take up most of summer and probably most of the fall too. If/When that gets finished I may continue here, but who knows which way the wind will blow at that time, if it is southerly then I am sure hawks and hacksaws shall be safe. The name of the album is one word that is 11 letters long and starts with “S”.

They’re Back!

Weezer has been, for me at least, a case of diminishing returns. Blue was a masterpiece, Pinkerton was great, Green was good, Maladroit was so-so and Make Believe was shit. So it is with much trepidation that I approached their new single ”Pork and Beans”, luckily it is as catchy/stupid 
as anything on Green and full of Weezerisms. I am really looking forward to 
the self-titled ”Red” album which comes out in June.

What do you do if you’re tired of playing the same kind of music year after year? Form a side project! Green Day’s last side project The Network was a great foray into New Wave, this time, however, they have decided to take the bands that influenced them and try to emulate them. Foxboro Hot Tubs - Stop Drop and Roll is what the project is called and that is simply because Green Day - Recreates Its Favorite Moments From Sixties Records was a bit too obvious. Have a listen and see if you can spot the references.

For what it is, it’s well done, but I was hoping for something a bit more original.  Here’s hoping the next official Green Day release isn’t this derivative.

Reports are coming in that the good ship Valencia (my home computer for those of you not in the know) has been taking on water at an alarming rate and in the words of Dr. Suess is Sink, Sank, Sunk. Sorry I just saw Horton Hears a Who, good movie btw. Apparently the C drive is pretty much completely shot, I knew it was slipping but I now hear it is decidely unresponsive. Unfortunately I am not there to assess the damage, but I am thinking that perhaps it is about time the ol’ girl was replaced. I mean after all she has put in a great run, burned well over a thousand CDs and DVDs in her day, and logged many, many hours on that big old series of tubes known as the internets. Yes, perhaps it is time I embraced this new fangled Pentium 4 technology and measure my RAM in Giga instead of Mega. When I return home later this week I will update, but for now I will just weep softly into my cereal.

So far this has been an okay year for music with British Sea Power and The Raconteurs topping my albums list. On the other hand, there have been a few letdowns, yes Michael Stipe and Kim Deal, I am looking at you!

2008 should be a good year in music but will it be? Here are some reccuds that I am looking forward to….

Steve Winwood - Nine Lives - okay, I wasn’t a big fan of his last few, but c’mon it’s Steve fucking Winwood! Hopefully it is less pop.

Death Cab for Cutie - Narrow Stairs - I didn’t really dig their last one, but I like the first single from this one.

Coldplay - Viva La Vida - yeah, X&Y blew goats, but Brian Eno is producing this one, and so I am excited.

Wolf Parade - Pardon My Blues (?) - not sure if that is the actual title, but I am sure that I am looking forward to it.

Franz Ferdinand - (TBA) - If it is as good as the first two, I will be very happy.

The Cure - (TBA) - Their last few albums have been hit or miss, okay mostly miss, but here’s hoping for a return to form.

Weezer - (TBA) -  Hmm, not sure about this one as Rick Rubin who produced the piece of shit known as Make Believe will be producing again.

Metallica - (TBA) -  I’m hoping producer  Rick Rubin will breathe new life into this band, then again remember what he did to Weezer.

The Postal Service - (TBA) - it’s been way too long since their last and hearing “Such Great Heights” on UPS commercials just makes me want this more.

The Verve - (TBA) - They’re back! Hopefully Urban Hymns was some sort of weird dream and the will return to the sound of A Northern Soul.

U2 - (TBA) - Hopefully this is the opposite of “How to Dismantle an Atomic Record and Make a Piece of Shit from the Parts”

Roxy Music - (TBA) - Original line-up including Brian Eno! INCLUDING motherfucker!!

Oasis - (TBA) - Their last album was pretty fucking good, hope these wankers put more emphasis on Andy Bell this time.

There are many more, but those are the main ones I am looking forward to. Anything not on this list that I should be hyped about?

Some people believe that there are certain songs you just don’t fuck with, that you should never cover, remix or remake in any way, shape or form. I don’t subscribe to this point of view, so it always makes me happy when someone has the cajones to take on one of these sacred cows.

Divide & Kreate whom I happen to feel has always been one of the leading mash-up/remix artists of the last few years, has taken on Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” and created a completely different beast, a frankenstein’s monster of guitars, electronics, tambourines and Chuck D that is stupidly contagious.  Bring the Noise indeed!

You have to hand it to Jack White, he figured out a way to keep his record from leaking, well at least from leaking weeks in advance. After the last White Stripes album was played in its entirety on a radio station 2 weeks prior to its release date, Jack was pretty upset, but he finally figured out how to stop such shenanigans - bring the record to the distrbutor as soon as it’s finished and ask them to release it as soon as it’s pressed. So, the album was finished in the first week of March and Consolers of the Lonely will be at retail March 25th. Do bands even need the months of promotion an album gets between the time it is finished and the time it gets released? I mean hell, Maxim is gonna write a review whether they hear the album or not, so fuck em.
